There is much deliberation about when the Inca city of Machu Picchu was actually first discovered as it’s not mentioned in any chronicles of the Spanish conquistadors. Its first official discovery came about on 24th July 1911, when an American professor, Hiram Bingham came to Peru in search of the Incas’ last hiding place, the Lost City of Vilcabamba. Instead he stumbled across Machu Picchu believing it to be what he was looking for. He returned in 1912 and then again in 1915 to undertake the difficult task of clearing away the dense forest and vegetation that covered the ruins. The site had never revealed to the conquering Spanish and remained virtually forgotten until Bingham’s discovery in the early part of this century.
